Gap Years in Ghana

Ghana is the jewel of West Africa. In what has long been a turbulent region, it has, for some time, been a pillar of stability and success. 'Ghana' derives from the Mande language and means 'Warrior King', but despite this fearsome title, the Ghanaian people are renowned for being welcoming, friendly and taking life at a slower pace that quickly becomes endearing.

Bordered by Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Togo to the west, north and east respectively, it stands out as a country that has had peaceful, democractic transitions of power and that has begun to realise its potential as a beautiful and bountiful land. It has also seen a rapid growth in tourism and some, relative, economic success earning it the rather double-edged title of 'Least Failed State in Africa'.

With a fast growing economy and a rapid demand for English language teaching, there is great potential for gap years to be rewarding and educative to all parties concerned. Gappers Lauren and Lucy tried their hands at teaching and coaching sport, and both left feeling like they had achieved something personally and in passing on a little of their knowledge and experience. If that's not enough to tempt you to visit this beautiful corner of the mother continent, it's also a great place to try out overlanding and see one of the less well-trodden corners of the world. Mary wrote a guide to overlanding and we're sold on it ourselves!

Volunteering in Ghana

Although Ghana is undoubtedly one of Africa's success stories, there still remains an awful lot of work to do, to ensure that, not only, is that progress maintained but also that it continues and drives forward the economy of Ghana.

This is most easily achieved by ensuring that everyone in the country attains a high standard of education and to maximise the potential for international trade, a high standard of spoken English. And that's where you come in.

You have the opportunity with these projects to contribute to this development and to ensure that the people you meet, teach and become friends with prosper and develop.
