Backpacking in Sri Lanka on a Gap Year

Countries  »  Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a tropical island nation in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of India. Formerly known as Ceylon - under the rule of Portugal, the Netherlands and the British Empire - it gained its independence from Britain in 1948, and was renamed Sri Lanka in 1972.

Sri Lanka experienced a long civil war throughout the latter years of the 20th century, but the government wiped out its opposition the Tamil Tigers in 2009, ending 30 years of bloodshed. The island is now embarking on brighter chapter of its history and is becoming increasingly popular with gap year travellers and backpackers.

The country features some amazing ancient temples and its rich biodiversity makes it very popular with nature lovers, gap year volunteers and wildlife photographers alike.
