You’ve decided to go on a gap year – great! The really tricky bit is working out where in the world you’re going to go. There are almost two hundred countries in the world. Some (g’day Australia!) are more popular gap year destinations than others and have well established tourist infrastructure, while others are a little more off-the-beaten-track. You’ll also need to consider what route you will take across your chosen region, and which countries are realistic to see in a single trip.
Don’t worry, it’s more fun than it sounds! You’re putting together the trip of a lifetime, remember. Sticking to popular gap year destinations like USA, France, New Zealand and Peru will make your life easier, as they’re well-equipped to provide amazing experiences – like tours, volunteering placements and jobs – for backpackers of all sorts. Thailand is also a brilliant base to kick off a wider-ranging gap year around South East Asia. If you’re feeling bolder, or simply want to see something a little different, there are plenty of gap year destinations for that too.
