Monica's going to Morocco

Follow Monica's journey through Morocco

Working for is undoubtedly one of the best jobs in the world but I'm not going to lie, reading about all of your travels, chatting about your upcoming trips on the message boards and ogling all your travel photos makes me green with envy. So I'm very pleased to announce that next week it's my turn to hit the road and don my backpack for a week of good old fashioned adventure.

I'm swapping our London offices for a week exploring Morocco with Intrepid Travel. I'm going to be live blogging, Tweeting, Facebooking and Instagramming as I travelling around some of the highlights Morocco has to offer.

Markets in Marrakesh

The trip begins in Marrakesh where I'll be heading straight to the markets and Medina which has been labelled as the 'greatest spectacle on earth'. I've been promised singers, drummers, dancers, snake charmers, fortune tellers, storytellers, jugglers and witch doctors.

I'll be getting involved in an Intrepid Foundation Project in Ouarzazate called Project Horizon. This has been set up to help disabled adults and children and trains them in skills like pottery, jewellery making and metal work.

I'll spend a night camping in the Sahara in a nomadic style woollen tent. I'm hoping to catch a glimpse of the Milkway and watch the sun rise over the sand dunes the following morning.

One of the things I'm most excited about is staying with a local family in the peaceful village of Aroumd where we will be trekking in the High Atlas Mountains. Their home is perched on a rocky outcrop and looks out over Mount Toubkal which is North Africa's highest peak. I'll be helping the local ladies to bake bread and visiting a bathhouse.

High Atlas Mountains, Morocco

I'll be staying in a riad (a traditional noble man's house) in Essaouria where I plan to give kite surfing a go and explore the tasty fish markets. Essaouira is a charming little town with white washed houses, blue shutters and art galleries galore. It's also where Ridley Scott chose to film parts of Kingdom of Heaven.
