Experiencing life as a medical intern in rural north-west India is a complete contrast to the bustling cities of Delhi and Mumbai. Palampur is a beautiful, rural market town where you will be able to experience a variety of health institutions including dental clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, physiotherapy centres and clinics that provide alternative and traditional forms of medical treatment.

This programme perfectly suits those who are currently studying, or looking to enrol on to a medical, nursing or physiotherapy course at university. This is a unique way to gain valuable work experience to make your application or general CV stand out from the rest. This is also a fantastic way to create life long memories and meet like-minded friends for life.
Whilst shadowing doctor’s and nurses as a medical intern, you will be expected to help in a number of departments every day. This diversity enables you to become exposed to a wide range of medical procedures and practices.
Interns can assist in the following departments:
- In-patients wards
- The laboratory
- Occupational therapy
- General wards
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Internal medicine
- General surgery

You must be enthusiastic and have a positive attitude to work in medicine. You will be required to work a 5 day week between 9.30am and 2pm. From 2pm onwards, volunteers are encouraged to relax with yoga lessons or do local siteseeing.
Your spacious volunteer accommodation can house up to 20 interns with 4 bed dormitory style rooms. Each room has en-suite bathroom facilities and basic WiFi. The real highlight is the roof top yoga practice that is held for interns once a week. Relax and unwind whilst gazing at the stunning views of the Himalayas. You are also able to make use of the on site badminton court and the many board games that people have left over the years.
Three delicious Indian style meals are provided for you each day. Your house is a 15 minute walk to the main road where you can catch a bus to town and your medical project locations.
We offer an introductory language and cultural week in Delhi before you head to Palampur. You will be able to learn some basic Hindi including helpful medical related words and phrases. You will also be given the opportunity to visit key tourist hot-spots such as the Taj Mahal in Agra.
