The Teaching English / Education internship program in Costa Rica is suitable for people who are outgoing, proactive, and comfortable in an educational setting – be it teachers, assistants or other educational staff. It’s recommended that participants have a knowledge of at least one elementary school subject or English teaching, in order to support local teachers with lessons. Students often need extra assistance with maths, science and Spanish language, but it’s also possible to teach other subjects such as English, sports, music, history, geography, environmental studies and computing (relevant to your level of experience and knowledge).
Education placements are diverse, so come with the flexibility to work with children (from as young as four years old) to young adults. Placements may be in public or private schools or more informal placements. Interns are placed according to placement availability, in addition to an analysis of their skills, experience, educational background, level of Spanish language ability, and duration of stay.
An understanding of basic Spanish is required. All interns who are not yet intermediate – fluent Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to take Spanish language lessons in addition to their internship program.
Intake dates for new interns are typically offered twice a month. The minimum duration requirement forTeaching English / Education internship placements is a commitment of at least 4 weeks.
