So what's been happening? Not much really, but it's all about to kick off because my volunteer work starts tomorrow. I'll be working with the charity LIFE Argentina, which works with impoverished children in the poorest areas of Buenos Aires. I'm really looking forward to helping out but I know it will be a challenging and possibly upsetting experience.
I've been trying to sort out a social life for myself here, and I'm going to a tango class tonight - woohoo! :D It's set me back 80 pesos (about 13 pounds), so it had better be good or I won't be happy! I'm sure there are loads of cheaper classes around but I was so desperate to start learning a Latin American dance that I just paid up without thinking. But hey ho, should be fun anyway!
I'm really settling into BA now - I've got my city slicker attitude down to a T! I long for the countryside, though, which is what I'm used to, but I'll be seeing loads of amazing landscapes when I head off on my overland trip so I'm not too bothered about that. :) It's totally mad here, with vehicles and people everywhere at all hours of the day and night, horns hooting non-stop and sky-high buildings looming over me wherever I walk. It's gorgeous as well, though. The people are so friendly and patient, and kisses abound everywhere!
Speaking of kisses... my wee waiter friend from the pasta restaurant saw me passing yesterday and ran out onto the street to ask me how I was and if I was coming in. I was surprised and touched at this alone, but when I told him (in Spanish, of course!) that I wasn't that day, he gave me a kiss on the cheek, a big smile and went back into the restaurant! How lovely is he?! I must have looked like a right loony when I bounced off down the street with the biggest grin imaginable and my face glowing like the setting sun. :D
I had a really nice lunch today with Alok, an American guy from my Spanish class. He's really interesting and has travelled a lot, so I had a great conversation with him. I had a pinch me moment in the restaurant when he said to me, "So let me get this straight... you've never been out of Europe before, you've never travelled on your own before, and you've come to a city where more people live than in the whole of your country. That's amazing, you're crazy!" I sat there and thought, "He's right, what the hell am I doing?! This is madness. Last year I was sitting exams at school, now I'm sitting in a restaurant in Buenos Aires with someone from halfway across the world!" Jeez, I'm not one to do things by half, am I? Might as well go the whole hog and jump in with both feet!
