Chilly in Chile
Updated 8 years, 7 months ago
Omg, I have never been so cold in my life as I am right now. Arriving in La Serena yesterday was glorious - lots of sunshine and a nice warm seaside breeze. However, as soon as night fell and I realised that the buildings from here up to Peru don't have any form of heating, I started to shiver violently both physically and mentally! I felt like I was sleeping in an ice cube last night and I was nearly in tears when I got up this morning because I was so cold. :( Then when I got into the shower I actually did cry when the water hitting my skin was even colder than the air!   After a few minutes, though, it got much warmer and I stayed there for ages, rejoicing at the heat! :D Now I realise just how much of a challenge adapting to a cold, high altitude climate is going to be. I can't wait to hit the salt flats and Bolivia but the thought of being constantly freezing is getting me down a bit just now, as is all the rotten food I've been eating over the last week or so (we haven't had access to our own kitchen for a while). I don't want to moan about things like this because it seems petty, but my body is crying out for some TLC and I haven't been able to give it any! :(
On a happier note, I was really excited about the possibility of visiting an astronomical observatory in Chile because I'd read that they were among the best in the world. I went to an observatory in the nearby town of Vicuña with Dawn last night and it was absolutely amazing - I hadn't realised before just how incredibly fascinating the night sky is. The astronomers were passionate and very informative, and I got to see some awe-inspiring sights through the telescopes, from constellations to the moon to the planet Saturn! I think I'd like to study astrophysics as a subsidiary subject at uni in first year rather than biology, because I'm so inspired now! :D I can't wait to visit another observatory when I get to San Pedro de Atacama.
