We are IRresponsible Servers of Alcohol

Today we woke at around 6.00 as we had to get into the centre of Geraldton for 8.30 to book in for the responsible service of alcohol course. This is a certificate that all the bars and restaurants will ask you to provide. It has now been made a legal requirement and should help us to find a lot more jobs.
When we walked into the front reception they were unable to find our paper work for about 10 minutes and when they did we weren’t on their system. So we had to wait while the receptionist put us on the system and then paid our fee’s, $28 each. It was lucky that we got there half an hour early! (Even though Joe did laugh at Emma in the car park saying she was a neek for getting us to school so early!)
When we got into the lesson we were greeted by our teacher who’s name was Gary. There was about 8 people in the class and he went through the various things that we would need to know for the short test that would be at the end of the lesson. Most of the things were pretty self explanatory, how to spot a drunk person, how to tell if someone is underage and how many units of alcohol in a standard drink. (In Australia they are only allowed two standard shots in any one drink including pitchers!!)
We took a break for lunch and popped into the canteen to grab some sausage rolls and a drink. It felt very odd being back at school surrounded by spotty 17 year olds. Soon it was time to go back in for the second half of the day course, we read out some role-plays (didn’t have to act them out thank god) and commented on what was wrong and what should have happened. All very straight forward.
Then came the test, this was very easy. Not only because the teacher had drummed the answers into our head over the past 6 hours but because when the test started half the answers were still on the board with the other half in the books on the table and he left the room… we think he must have been on commission. After we had finished the test and told that we had passed (YAY!) we decided that we would stop off at the bottle shop to grab some beers as we were now irresponsible servers of alcohol.
When we got back to Ernie & Faye’s we told them the good news that we had passed and that the certificate would be sent to their address. We will need them to forward this onto us if we get a job in a bar and asked them to keep an eye out for it.
We sat down for dinner, the rest of the curry, spaghetti Bolognese and potatoes. Faye had made baked pears with cinnamon for dessert and Joe was looking forward to this as he loves cinnamon J
Faye and Ernie had mentioned that they were expecting Karl to arrive tonight and we were hoping he did as he was the only one on the west coast that we hadn’t met yet. Just as we were finished eating Karl came through the door. Kath had told us he was a tall guy but when Emma stood next to him she looked like a midget! We sat around chatting with Karl for quite a while, finding out about his job, he works on a ship off the coast of Angola surveying under the sea for oil, coal and gas…an interesting job but it’s six weeks on the ship and then six weeks off so it can be quite tough becoming accustomed to being back on dry land.
We’d had an early start and a long day so at around 11 we headed off to bed.
