When you say ‘Christmas’ to me I instantly think of festive treats, Santa hats, mince pies, Christmas trees, snow, roaring fires, mulled wine, Christmas markets and stockings full of presents.
I don’t think of white, sandy beaches, scuba diving in tropical waters or sipping cocktails in an infinity pool overlooking the sea but that’s exactly how I spent my Christmas in 2012.
I was o the gorgeous island of Nusa Lembongan, just off mainland Bali in Indonesia, and I was looking forward to a relaxing Christmas with a difference.
A breakfast of cheese toasties and banana pancakes was served as we swung in the hammocks outside our beach bungalow. We were stocking up with energy before we headed out on a tiny fishing boat to go scuba diving.
Any scuba divers will know that diving on a backpacker’s budget makes it a pricey hobby but it was Christmas day so we decided to treat ourselves. Thankfully, it was well worth it.
As we sank to the bottom of the ocean we looked up and saw three huge manta rays circling above our heads. These gentle giants were incredibly relaxed as they hovered near the surface and played in the bubbles we created.
After that it seemed like the day couldn’t get any better until we jumped on the scooters we’d hired for the week and headed towards ‘Dream Beach. We’d heard this mysterious beach spoken about through the Chinese whispers of backpacker stories and we were determined to find it.
After a few hours of riding and a fair few wrong turns we eventually came across Dream Beach. It was the most amazing beach bar with bungalows and an infinity pool overlooking the sea. We spent the day sunbathing, drinking cocktails and splashing in the sea and while there may not have been any snow, Christmas trees or mince pies, it was definitely the perfect place to spend Christmas Day.
