About Me

Dave Owen

At home

South Korea

To be honest, I'm not sure. I felt a little more comfortable there than I did in other Asian countries like China and Thailand. Perhaps this was due to the American influence. I spent most of my time in Seoul, which is a really great city packed with things to do, from temples to museums to a ridiculous amount of really great parks (I like me a park). It's clean, the people are friendly and stupidly good-looking, and it has really good public transport. More than anything I just really enjoyed walked around there. The city has a really vibrant atmosphere, and I was there during amazing weather, and I love nothing more than being able to walk around in shorts and T-shirt at night. I also spent a few days in a coastal city called Sokcho, which was absolutely beautiful, and where I climbed a big mountain that made me sweatier than I've ever been before. Geez.

Germany, Spain

I need to see more of Europe, dammit!

My most boring but rather practical tip is to carry wet wipes at all times. Life saver. And always learn how to say 'please' and 'thank you' in the native language. It can go a long way.

I am a pretty normal sort of guy, and a fairly conservative traveler. I generally prefer to go on trips for a few weeks at a time, rather than stay away from home for months at a time. That said, I've never actually gone away for more than 3 weeks. I'm sure I could adjust.

In China my friends and I were sort of kidnapped by an over eager driver. We were on a public bus to the Great Wall on a really rainy day, and he was obviously in cahoots with the bus driver, who pulled over in the middle of nowhere and helped to usher us out onto the road before he promptly drove off. This gave us little choice but to get into the stranger's car and hope he took us where we wanted to go. Thankfully he did, and turned out to be pretty friendly, even lending us his umbrella. ...it's not the best story in the world.
