Went for our Christmas Eve Cruise out on Sydney Harbour. Included dinner and a free bar. Got some great views of Sydney at night. Was good fun but it finished at 11.30 rather than going past midnight. Then spent the next half an hour trying to find a bar to get into. Gave up in the end as the queue for the one we wanted was too long so went to the bar opposite, brilliantly named The Crystal Palace Hotel, to wait for the queue to die down then went back later. They even gave us free crackers, cheese and sausage in the Hotel.
Christmas Day was disappointingly cold. It only averaged about 20 degrees rather than the usual 30+. Didnt stop us heading for the Bondi Beach though. We were surprised by how much was open – despite being told everything would be shut McDonalds and Hungry Jacks were open and there seemed to be a lot of locals having their Christmas lunch in there. The people on the beach were predominantly backpackers, but we all got our santa hats on and tried to pretend it was warmer. Spent the afternoon playing silly games, before having a mini feast for dinner with our leftovers from lunch. In true tradition, we had made far more than we needed.
Boxing Day was much warmer and we went down to the Harbour to watch the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Didnt know exactly where it left from, so decided to sit with the crowds. As it happened you could barely see anything from where we were as the boats did not pass us. Spent the afternoon sunbathing instead. Went to the cinema in the evening so see “Meet the Fockers”.
