I have just finished travelling both the North and South Island with Kiwi Experience and I'm so glad I did! I started travelling (on my own) from Auckland to The Bay of Islands, I met loads of people on the bus and we ended up sticking together and travelling the whole way together (picking up some others along the way of course). I was so worried about travelling on my own but it's the best thing I could have ever done! The amount of people you meet and the amount of friends you make is unreal.
I reccommend travelling with the Kiwi Experience bus because the drivers are so much fun, they're all really nice and help you out with planning your trip and they are always willing to help you out with any questions or worries you may have. They take you to some really cool places along the way to your destination which I know some other companies don't. It's really good they do this cause you get to see so much more of the island and it breaks up the journey as well.
The good thing about it is that you can spend as long or as little in each place as you want and the office are really helpful at organising other buses for you (but try to give as much notice as you can cause they do get booked up during peak season) but they will try to put you on standby incase someone doesnt show up on the day.
I did the Fush n Chups which I think may now be called the Funky Chicken, not to sure?? But they're all pretty much the same, all the people we met were all on different passes but it didnt matter cause we all went to the same places except for a couple that went on to a couple of other places but we all met up within a few days anyway.
Some people I met had done other companies and said Kiwi was definitely way better compared to others. It's also a massive relief knowing you have accommodation sorted in every place as well.
