Holidays with the kids nowadays!

- Take plain white plastic bags with you to put your stuff in when you're wandering around. Less noticeable than the usual tourist backpack - Take a sarong - doubles up as a beach towel, sun shade, drying up cloth, covers your legs for sacred sites, general towel, 'rope' to tie things, blanket etc. etc. - If you're hungry on the plane always ask for any spare meals. There are plenty of them. Filling up on the plane saves you cash and hunting around for food when you're tired and probably jet-lagged

I took a gap year at 18 and backpacked around the world. Whilst at University I continued to travel funding myself by busking with my didgeridoos and holding down loads of jobs to earn and save the cash. After Uni I wrote a book called 'Before You Go' to advise young people on how to backpack the world - essentially inspiration on how to get started. That was in 1997 at the age of 22. The first version of gapyear.com started in 1998 and you're now on what is the end of that story. I am the most passionate (and boring) person in the world when it comes to gap years - and as a result I count myself lucky that my life centres around my passion. Thank you for using the site - let me know if you have any problems, issues, feedback, ideas or nice comments to pass onto the team. Tom

In Australia when squishing ants that I thought would bite me in the middle of the night (in fairness I had been nipped the day before and had a masive reaction to it) - I climbed up onto the bunk bed to reach the ones at the top of the wall. And stuck my head in a ceiling fan. I took this as a sign to be kinder to animals and insects and the scar I carry the reminder for life.
