Notting Hill Carnival set to go ahead

London’s biggest street festival looks set to go ahead despite the recent riots in the UK capital.

Some local residents have called for the event, that attracts around a million people over August bank holiday weekend, to be cancelled to reduce the risk of further trouble and to ease pressure on police resources. A number of Facebook pages have been created as part of the campaign.

But organisers are reported as saying it’s too early to a make firm decision. And a police spokesman has been quoted as saying that police numbers are adequate. “Given the huge number of people who take part in the carnival, crime rates are low”, he said. Last year, there were a total of 101 arrests.
