YouTube fight for Gold Coast flights
Social media competition offering free flights to Australia takes off
Gap year backpackers and travellers have been competing online for the chance to win a trip to the Gold Coast jungle and take part in 'bush tucker trials'.
The competition, aptly titled 'I'm A Backpacker... Get Me In Here!', has been a hit on video-sharing site YouTube, gaining thousands of video views and hundreds of 'Likes'.
Earlier this month gapyear.com teamed up with Gold Coast Tourism and Qantas to announce that they were flying six travellers to the Australian subtropics to compete for the title of 'Backpacking King or Queen of the Jungle'. The overall victor will receive a grand mystery prize.
To enter the competition, travellers need only submit a 60-second video explaining why they want to go. The six winners will be decided by the number of 'Likes' their videos receive on gapyear.com's YouTube channel.
Marcus Sherifi, spokesperson for gapyear.com, said: "The response to 'I'm A Backpacker... Get Me In Here' has been amazing. People have got really excited about it and shared the competition videos with their friends on Twitter and Facebook."
He added: "We've had over a dozen entries now and it's really impressive the time and effort people have gone to. Some people really want to win!
"There's less than a week until the competition deadline so we're expecting a flurry of activity. After all, there are still six winners to be announced!"
Driven by contestant activity, social media enthusiasm and media coverage, 'I'm A Backpacker... Get Me In Here!' has the potential to go viral before the competition closing date of 31st January.
The feedback from competition entrants has been positive. Daisy Ashworth, a backpacker who submitted the first entry, said: "This competition gives people like me the opportunity to experience something only a handful of people will ever get to do.
"I really want to go back to Australia and if I can do that being part of an amazing competition like this then I'm going to try and be part of it."
Tommy Davis, a spokesperson for Gold Coast Tourism, said: "The ‘I’m A Backpacker...’ competition will give six lucky winners the chance to explore Australia’s Gold Coast. What better way to see the world than by making some new friends in the jungle?
"All the winners can extend their stay after the competition allowing them the opportunity to undertake the numerous experiences that the Gold Coast has to offer."
To explain how the competition works, gapyear.com have produced their very own fashionably low-budget example entry , which can be viewed below:
There is still time for those interested in the competition to submit their entry before the competition closes at the end of the month. For full details, visit the competition homepage. The winners will be announced from 9th February 2012.
