London voted as world's best tourist destination 2012
If you're heading to the UK on a gap year then this summer is the time to do it.
London has been voted as the world's best tourist destination for 2012, beating New York and Rome to the top spot.
The award, as voted by users of TripAdvisor, is just another accolade in an already successful year for the UK. London and the UK also scooped awards for the Best Global Destination, the Best European Destination and the Best UK Destination.
Gordon Innes, CEO, London & Partners, commented: "This accolade couldn't be better timed for the capital in this momentous year and we are delighted that millions of travellers have voted London as the number one destination in the world, Europe and the UK.
"These three awards are testament to the wonderful array of attractions, dining and accommodation that set London apart from all of these other destinations."
With the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June, then the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it's shaping up to be a golden year for London and the UK.
London has always been one of the most popular destinations in the world among backpackers and travellers due to the number of free attractions, such as the British Museum and the Tate Modern, so heading to the UK this summer on a gap year is one of the best times to do it.
