Sex toys and diamonds

The items left at London City Airport by travellers

We've all been there when we've got on a bus or a train and thought "oh shit, I've left half my clothes at the hostel," but have you ever left behind a sex toy or a bag a diamonds? No?

These are some of the items left behind by travellers at London City Airport. And if you think that's bad, then think how the people felt when they left behind their signed (but otherwise blank) cheque book, and most astonishingly of all, £50,000 in cash.

Other less than commonplace possessions misplaced by travellers at the Docklands airport have included adult sex toys, pricey designer watches, glass eyes and false teeth.

The airport puts the expensive calibre of the things that tumble into its lost property office down to the number of high-flyers who pass along its runways.

"London City is popular with business travellers and celebrities, so we see more than our fair share of valuable items left in Departures," says Darren Grover, the airport's chief operating officer. "I imagine the person who left the £50,000 felt particularly sick."

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this large quantity of cash was soon reunited with its owner, but other forgotten personal effects have proved more difficult to return to their proper home.

"The £50,000 cash was claimed, but the owner of the false teeth never did come forward," Mr Grover continues. "Our advice to travellers is to take care when moving around. Going through security is a key time to make sure you've collected everything."

One item which proved easy to restore to the correct person was a sporting achievement award - left behind by a famous British Olympian - who was easily identifiable.

"The award had the athlete's name etched on it, so was quickly returned to its rightful owner," Mr Grover adds.
