Sharknado 2 Gets the Go-Ahead

The "Bad Movie" Bites Back...

Volunteering with sharks has been a popular gap year choice for years, but if sharks could fly, would we be so keen to save them?

"Bad movie" fanatics can probably guess where we are going with this, but yes it’s happening! Syfy have confirmed they will be bringing back Sharknado in 2014 for a sequel, following the surprising yet staggering success of the original straight to TV movie.

Nearly 1.37 million viewers tuned in on Thursday 11th July to watch Sharknado’s debut, which saw man eating sharks showering Los Angeles as they were sucked up and spat out by a series of tornados. The bizarre plot became the height of conversation on Twitter whilst it was aired, racking up an incredible 5,000 tweets per minute at its peak.

Strangely, has seen the popular rise of Sharknado align closely with an increase in the number of people looking to volunteer with sharks on a gap year. Coincidence?

Celebrities such as Wil Wheaton, former star of Star Trek: The Next Generation fuelled the Twitter hype, sharing their views on the movie to their millions of followers.

US actress Olivia Wilde joked with actress Elizabeth Banks about starring in the second film as a Siamese two headed shark.

The sequel is set to follow a similar premise, this time with sharks scattering the streets of New York.

No further details have been disclosed since the news was announced on Late Night with Jimmy Falllon on Tuesday. It’s unknown whether leading lady Tara Reid (that one off American Pie) and co-star Ian Zeiring (who?), will be back with a vengeance in the second Sharknado instalment.

Producers are looking get their Twitter fans more involved this this time around by asking for suggestions for a snappy Sharknado 2 subtitle.
