Backpackers will soon be able to fly non-stop from London to Australia when airline Qantas launches a new service in March 2018.

The 9,000-mile flight from London to Perth, in Western Australia, will take around 17 hours, using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. It’ll be the longest non-stop passenger route in the world.

Perth is quite nice.

Initially promised for 2017, the Australian government hopes that the new service will boost tourism, a sector that employs some 580,000 people. The UK is Australia’s third-largest source of international visitors.

“When Qantas created the Kangaroo Route to London in 1947, it took four days and nine stops,” said Qantas chief executive officer Alan Joyce. “Now it will take just 17 hours from Perth non-stop.”

The new service will be a serious boost to anybody making the long journey down under, and while Perth is a long way from popular visitor cities like Sydney and Melbourne, it’s an excellent jumping off point for any Aussie adventure.
