Summary

Southern Italy Summer Holiday Course

Go deeper into the diverse culture of Italy and the Mediterranean from the Ancient World to the Baroque.

Southern Italy is perhaps the more adventurous Summer option from AHA. This course travels through Sicily, across the Straits of Messina to Reggio Calabria, up to Naples and finally to Rome over a period of two weeks.  If you want to know about art, you'll love this course.

Short enough to fit in, long enough to change your life.  Most students have never done art history before - all you need is curiosity.  Great before an Art Foundation Course and brilliant for a CV.  It's about civilization: Greeks, Romans, Normans and the Baroque.

The main theme of this trip is the Classical tradition from the Greek world to Michelangelo, with a liberal smothering of the Baroque.

A course like this can add real lustre to a student's academic credentials. The itinerary varies but typically is:

DAY 1 - 3 (NIGHTS IN PALERMO)

Initial orientation, catacombs, incredible mosaics and meeting Serpotta.  Palermo lies on a magnificent line of coast, backed by looming mountains.  It is a wonderful place to go swimming on a free afternoon.

DAY 4 (NIGHT AT SELINUNTE)

To the wonderful temple of Segesta and once great city of Selinunte.  That night we stay at a hotel near the beach.

DAY 5 (NIGHT IN SYRACUSE)

On the road to the “Imperial Roman Villa” at Casale, assumed to be that of a retired Emperor due to its exquisite mosaics.  Dine overlooking great harbour where the Athenian fleet crumbled, as described by Thucydides.

DAY 6 – 7 (NIGHTS IN SYRACUSE)

Stay on the ancient isle of Ortigia seeing Caravaggios, Baroque churches and Greek temples.  Boat trip to Caves of the Cyclops, from Odysseus.

DAY 8 (NIGHT IN REGGIO CALABRIA)

Board private transport across the Straits of Messina and see, from the classical period, the most extraordinary large scale Greek bronzes ever found.

DAY 9 (NIGHT IN NAPLES)

To Naples by train, feeling like seasoned travellers: visit to the boardroom of a bank to see the last known painting by Caravaggio.

DAY 10 – 11 (NIGHT IN NAPLES)

Learning about the Neapolitan Baroque, when Naples was the most populous and richest city in Europe followed by an afternoon possibly snorkelling over ancient ruins.  Then on to Pompeii and Herculaneum.

DAY 12 – 13 (NIGHT IN NAPLES)

A free morning followed by a visit to the greatest archeological museum in the world, some contemporary and some Renaissance art.

DAY 14 – 15

On the last full day, we go to the Island of Ischia and incredible gardens of Mortella: on our last day we make our way back to the UK.

This course is a natural extension to AHA's Northern Italy trip and indeed quite a number of students do both courses over two summers or both in one go.  Please ask us about discounts if you would like to do both summer courses.

For art historians, this course will expand beyond the usual cannon of art history to give the student a great depth of understanding and visual experience. For classicists, historians, or indeed, anyone who questions the 'need to know' culture, this course will do much to engender a cultivated mind.

>“The AHA course kindled in me a love and appreciation of Italian art such that I was able to consider taking a course in Renaissance history and art, as part of my Italian/French degree having never done any art history before, and accomplish an A grade. Thank-you.”
