Amazon Rainforest Conservation
You'll begin your project in the ancient Inca capital city of Cusco where you'll receive an induction and orientation before starting on a journey through the High Andes to the Acjance Park Guard Station where you’ll learn about the Cloud Forest. Then you descend into the Amazon via motorised canoe down the Madre de Dios River. A real Latin American adventure!
On this multi-activity project you'll benefit from professional training and actively assist in the environmental monitoring study at multiple locations. The longer you participate on the project, the more skills you'll develop. You’ll also get involved in rewarding Community Development work with the local indigenous families and communities.
The purpose of the work is to monitor and better understand rainforest biodiversity with a view to providing sustainable solutions and improving rainforest conservation.
Projects undertaken will fall under three main areas; conservation, sustainability and education. No previous experience of conservation is necessary. You will receive on-site training and assist in environmental monitoring at multiple locations. Ongoing projects you may help on include the frog house, mammal monitoring, parrot monitoring and the ecology club. Duties will include scientific monitoring and surveillance of wildlife, data collection and interpretation, collection of sample species and construction (such as building hides and observation posts).
As with all conservation projects, your work will depend on what is required at the time your project takes place. It is also governed by uncontrollable factors, such as the weather, nesting seasons, etc. There is a lot of scope here to develop new ideas and/or projects and to really make a difference.
