Summary

Hanchi Horseback Conservation

Combine thrilling rides in the bush with wildlife conservation!

Set on a vast reserve in the Greater Kruger area of South Africa, this project offers a unique combination: You will work with former race horses from Zimbabwe, while taking an active role in safeguarding the wildlife in the reserve from poaching. You will also patrol the reserve to look out for any signs of intruders, such as cut fences and footprints, to protect the rhino from the threat of poaching.

Rhino are one of the key species monitored by the project

What will I do?

Working with thoroughbred horses, you will be involved in patolling a wildlife reserve on horseback. During the patrols, you will participate in monitoring of key species as well as providing an effective deterrent for poachers. he sensitivity of the horse makes them ideal partners in traversing the bush and reserve management, ensuring game are less stressed and by nature alerting you to young and elusive animals.

  • Patrol the reserve on horseback
  • Learn traditional tracking techniqies as well as telemetry tracking
  • Monitor the wildlife population
  • Study wildlife movements and behaviour
  • Be responsible for equine husbandry and care
  • Help with reserve management and maintenance

Accommodation:

Rustic tented bush camp. You will also spend some nights in “fly camps” - more basic camps at locations further out in the reserve so that you can reach the more remote areas on horseback as well, overnighting at these camps.

You will go on frequent, extended work rides in the reserve
