Summary

Nepal Child Care Volunteering

Since 2007,  the Pod team in Nepal have been supporting Child Care Centres, Schools, Street Children's Centre and Children Homes by providing volunteers and financial support through the Pod Charity.

Pod's support has meant that the Children’s Home is able to provide children with accommodation, food, education. The Street Children’s Centre is able to work towards its goal of reintroducing children with their families. The centre works closely with local organisations to provide support for the whole family unit. When it is not possible to reunite children with their parents, the centre helps to find children a safe, permanent home. The Street Children’s centre also assists the children in gaining the skills required for school since some children that arrive at the centre and have never attended formal lessons. The Children’s Homes use their limited resources to provide the children with accommodation, food, education and support.

The nurseries and child care centres have limited staff and resources so volunteers are able to help support the local staff and provide focused educational assistance to the children.

Volunteers work act as positive role models for the children, inspiring a passion to learn and developing creative thinking.

Volunteer role: What will I be doing?

Volunteers usually work five days per week for around four to six hours per day. Child care volunteers in Nepal help with the day to day running of the centres and each day will be different, volunteer may be involved helping the children eat lunch as well as organising activities for the children. Volunteers should come prepared with ideas for activities suitable for children of different ages – think of your favourite playground games, nursery rhymes, stories and arts & crafts sessions!

Volunteers can choose to stay at one child care placement throughout their time in Nepal or arrange to volunteer at a range of the placements. For example you can spend mornings helping at the day care centre then go help at Street Children’s centre in the late afternoon.

Our school placements require volunteers to prepare and teach classes with minimal support or guidance from the school so we encourage qualified teachers to volunteer.  However, with the correct pre-departure preparations, such as an online TEFL course, volunteers with no previous experience can be just as valuable.

Pod Volunteer works with several schools in Pokhara and the village of Bhalam. Volunteers can choose where they would prefer to be based and can combine several placements.

The nurseries and child care centres have limited staff and resources so volunteers are able to help support the local staff and provide focused educational assistance to the children.

Volunteers with an interest in sports can lead group activities at schools and chilrdren's homes and work act as positive role models for the children, inspiring a passion to learn and developing creative thinking.

How will I make a difference?

You can help make a positive difference to the children’s lives. You can show them that people do care and you can bring a little more love and fun into their lives.

You can also help them towards a position where they can get work by developing their confidence and skills in communicating in English. Pokhara is a city that relies on the tourist trade, so if a local person has a better grasp of English, they will be in a stronger position to work in tourism and bring benefit to the community. Knowledge of English also opens up the internet, empowers people to learn for themselves and creates new areas of potential.

Feedback:

“I loved that the children were welcoming and wanted you in their class, no matter what placement I was on the children would make so much effort to speak with you and they loved it when you spent time playing games, singing, dancing or whatever it is you can do. To see them smile and be happy that you are there with them was the best feeling!”
