Summary

Pre-Vet and Veterinary Internships

South Africa

Develop your interests and studies in a veterinary science or animal welfare by participating in this pre-veterinary internship headed by an experienced and qualified botanist in South Africa. You will be able to develop your practical skills and knowledge by working alongside local wildlife expert in 3 different settings; with African wildlife on game reserves, with livestock on farms and domestic animals in rural villages and townships. It really is a varied placement and you will have the opportunity to be exposed to large and small animals living from mice to monkeys in various locations, from the bush to the home.

Being an intern in South Africa is a fantastic opportunity for you to gain a much better understanding of issues facing a range of animals from big to small, domestic to wild. Working alongside local experts you will discover who veterinary practice is approached in South Africa and the treatment available. You will also understand how domestic animals have a much tougher time than they often do in other countries.

Bolivia

The project is based at a zoo where standards of animal care are high and it is partnered with a leading zoo in the UK. The zoo is home to indigenous Bolivian wildlife as well as non-indigenous animals that have been rescued from homes and circuses. Birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish such as condors and bears, are cared for by the local veterinarian team, under the guidance of the zoo’s director. The zoo is in need of additional funding, as are many projects in Bolivia, but essential activities such as lab oratory testing, nutritional enrichment and habitat development take place. Intern in Bolivia at this zoo and apply your skills and knowledge in a setting higher than you will have experienced before!

This veterinary internship allows students and professionals to see how indigenous animals in Belize are cared for in a zoo setting. The project benefits by having an extra pair of hands and being able to share strategies with others.

Ecuador

On this internship, you will be able to work at a centre, based in the Amazon rainforest, which has 4 hectors of land used for wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and release. A local family who work with the Ministry of the Environment and the Environmental Police founded this project. The centre is home to over 200 animals including parrots, wild cats and monkeys. By joining us in Ecuador, you will be able to gain first hand experience of practises being taken to positively impact the lives of birds and animals.

This veterinary internship allows students to see a range of areas such as pharmacology, clinical pathology, anaesthesiology and physiology. The centre benefits from receiving interns who have knowledge and some training in the areas that relate directly to animals.
