Working in a Kindergarten in Peru

What will I be doing?

Every day will vary but a typical day at the kindergarten may include;

  • Playing games or early learning activities
  • Songs and dancing
  • Creative activities; painting, drawing, arts and crafts
  • Monitoring playtime
  • Helping with meal times
  • Cleaning and tidying

Volunteers work alongside full time local staff to care for around 150 children at the Day Care centre with children.

No Spanish skills are required however for volunteers with Spanish you can also choose to volunteer in the afternoon with children aged 6-13, helping with homework, leading educational games or reading together.

For volunteers interested in learning Spanish, there is a Spanish School next to the accommodation where volunteer's often do afternoon lessons or introductory courses.

Volunteers live in the city of Arequipa, famous for its historic and beautiful architecture it is also surrounded by some of the most spectacular terrain in Peru including the world’s deepest canyons.

How is the project making a difference?

The kindergarten provides a safe, positive and affordable child care option for families and children that are in need of it most. The project provides a stable child care option for low income families in the area, many of the children come from single-parent homes or have very young parents, in many cases there are ongoing issues at home including domestic abuse, alcoholism or drug issues.

The project offers day care for ages 2-5, an after-school club for ages 6-13 as well as counselling and legal advice for families that need this.

Why are volunteers needed?

The kindergarten is run by full time Peruvian staff however they are always in need of an extra pair of hands. Due to the age of the children, sessions (particularly in the morning!) can be boisterous! Whilst the local teachers lead sessions, volunteers are able to assist with daily activities, games, play time monitoring and more.

“The children were a handful (in the best possible way!) but it enabled me to become better at dealing with them. It was a challenge! I liked the family environment at the project, there was a real supportive feel.”
