Summary

New Zealand's Hop-On Hop-Off Adventure Bus

Catering to young, adventurous backpackers, Stray aims to get you further off the beaten track in New Zealand, to show you the hidden gems only the locals know about and introduce you to the real New Zealand.

You can choose to travel on a fixed-date small group adventure tour, or a flexible travel pass which allows you to hop-on and hop-off anywhere on the route and travel for up to 12months!

Either way, you'll be guided by a great local guide, be introduced to NZ culture and see all the must-see destinations.

Why Travel With Stray?

1. We stay closer to the action

You've come all the way to New Zealand, so you'll want to get close to the action! We stay in great kiwi locations, such as on a real sheep/cattle station, amongst Lord of the Rings scenery and beside at least eight National Parks. Staying in these places makes sure you can easily access the good stuff.

2. “Stray” is what we do best! We stop to do things along the way

Some bus companies will just take you from A to B with barely a toilet break in between! We are Stray and Stray is what we do! That means with us you will experience great stops en route. For example, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (rated as NZ's best one day walk), skiing at National Park; a walk, sail or kayak in the Abel Tasman National Park… “must do” things that other trips don't include time to do.

Relax in free natural geothermal hot pools… just one of our many hidden gems!

3. We have smaller group sizes

Our average group size is 30. The benefits to having this size are many - you don’t feel herded around, we are able to include many more accommodation and activity options, it’s easier to meet people… plus we can get you off the beaten track and do way more in a day! Happy customers = happy us.

4. Experience outstanding unique stops and activities

To name a few…  a high country sheep station, a lodge situated in native bush, a BBQ at one of New Zealands most beautiful beaches, a Maori culture experience with a local family,  overnight next to NZ’s highest mountain and so much more.  All of these and more are exclusive to Stray and some of our top-rating features.

5. We attract the best people!

We like to think we're pretty hot. In fact we attract independent people of a huge range of nationalities and ages - people who want to get involved in the place they are travelling rather than just look out the bus window. We place value on attitude over age. You will make life-long friends and within a few days it will feel like one big holiday with your mates.

Visit beautiful secluded bays with turquoise water and white sand

6. Top Kiwi Guides

Stray is NZ-known as being a top place to work - and we should know! We give our driver guides market-leading training to help them take you around New Zealand; as well as being your local “guidebook” they provide commentary, book beds and activities, and provide information on things from New Zealand history and culture… to the best drinking spots. These are all people that you’d like to adventure with.

7. Save money whilst getting off the beaten track

With Stray you don't have to buy costly side trips as we already include out-of-the-way places like Raglan, Mt Cook, and the Abel Tasman. We save you time by picking you up and dropping you off at your accommodation; and by our extensive knowledge of where and what the best things in New Zealand are. We get you deals on activities so you can afford to do more, and there are always free things for you to do (see each Stray pass page itinerary for the free options in each place).

8. Orange is the new Green – with one of NZ’s most efficient bus fleets

Stray is committed to environmentally sustainable tourism. Rather than just token gestures of energy efficient light bulbs and recycling (which we do anyway) we lead the market with the newest bus fleet to reduce our emissions (with the best fuel economy and Euro 3 and 4 spec engines) instead of just trying to off-set them. By choosing Stray you are helping reduce your own carbon output – travelling on a bus is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel, but only if the bus is full! We reduce our departure days and bus sizes in NZ's low season to further reduce unnecessary output. We have Enviro-Gold accredition from Qualmark.

9. Don't just take our word for it!

We won the Best Visitor Transport Award at the NZ Tourism Awards and the Best NZ Tour Operator Award at the Australasian Golden Backpack (traveller-voted) Awards in 2010. We have extremely high customer satisfaction and referrals (97.5%) because we offer travellers more of what they want – down-to-earth, real New Zealand with an awesome crew and a greater emphasis on your needs.

Hike across three active volcanoes and complete one of New Zealand's best walks.

10. And finally…

You can realistically do the things that we list in our brochure and on the website. Many of the things that we identify on our trips we have to go out of our way to do. For example, going to Mt Cook and Stewart Island, and doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing  are part of our normal itinerary so Stray offers the best chance to do them on our trips. You don't have to hop off the bus, leave your group, and make your own way to enjoy these iconic NZ activities. It amazes us that we have to say this but be wary of companies that indicate that they do things (like go to Mt Cook or Stewart Island) without saying exactly how they do so (when they really make you buy a transfer with another operator). Be aware also that you simply can't access much of what we think is the best stuff in New Zealand by using public transport – it simply doesn't go there.
