Nepal Earthquake Disaster Recovery
Fortunately, there was no loss of life amongst the members of the communities in which Kaya's projects are based, but there was considerable damage to homes, the school, and roads in the area. The damage to the road leading to the village is estimated to cost $20,000. In addition, manpower is needed to help with the task of rebuilding, as it is labour intensive, and members of the community do not have the funds to pay for additional help with the rebuild.
The task of rebuilding roads, the school (which was condemned by the government as being not fit for use) and homes is daunting for the community, which was already vulnerable. Many of the ladies and children live here because they were sexually abused, or their mothers were widowed and have lost their status in society. Volunteer support is much needed in helping the community to get back on its feet, whether it is helping with day to day activities such as daycare for the younger children, agriculture activities or assisting with the rebuild efforts. Kaya have been working in this community for some time now, so you can be assured about the sustainability and authenticity of the placements.
Your role can focus on supporting women through caring for the children and helping at the school enables the women to focus on agriculture or rebuild activities or assisting with agriculture enables the ladies to spend time helping the community with rebuild activities, so all are equally as important.
