Summary

Road to Rio

Day 1: Buenos Aires
Welcome to Argentina and the start of your adventure! Known as the ‘Paris of South America’, Buenos Aires is a beautiful city full of lovely green parks, plazas and wide boulevards and an exciting nightlife. Arrive to our hotel and free time. This evening our group welcome meeting takes place. Overnight - Buenos Aires

Days 2 - 5: Uruguay - charming Montevideo & Salto
Buenos Aires - Colonia de Sacramento – Montevideo – Salto - Posadas. Today we leave Buenos Aires and head to Uruguay. The charming riverside Colonia de Sacramento in the southwest of the country is our first destination and the UNESCO listed barrio historico, or old city, is the perfect place to explore the numerous museums and churches.

On day 3 we head to the capital of Uruguay, the time-warped city of Montevideo. With its 1930s buildings and cars, the city offers plenty of interesting architectural styles, historic houses and museums. For shopaholics, the outdoor and indoor markets are perfect for shopping whilst the port and seaside are a treasure trove of steak and seafood restaurants. After one night here we continue on to the beautifully presented town of Salto where you can soak in the local hot springs or visit the aqua park. On day 5 we take an overnight bus to the port city of Posadas. Overnight - Colonia de Sacramento (1), Montevideo (1), Salto (1), overnight bus (1) (B:3)

Days 6 - 7: Frontier towns, Cattle Ranches
Posadas - San Ignacio - Foz de Iguazu. On arrival in Posadas we continue by bus to the Jesuit ruins at San Ignacio Mini, some of the best kept Jesuit ruins in the area. Built in 1696, these UNESCO listed ruins document how the Jesuits lived when they came here to convert the Guarani Indians to Catholicism, and were famously featured in the film ‘The Mission’. We spend one night here before departing for Brazil. Positioned on the confluence of the Parana and Iguazu rivers, the town is only 18 kilometres away from the renowned Iguazu Falls. The afternoon will be spent at the authentic working ranch of Estancia Las Mercedes where we will be welcomed with light snacks and tales of the ranch’s history told by our hosts. Later, enjoy a traditional Argentine barbecue of local produce and spend the remainder of the day exploring the ranch, relaxing by the pool or opt to take a horse ride or canoe excursion before arriving into Foz de Iguazu. Overnight - San IgancioMini (1), Overnight, Foz de Iguazu (1) (B:1, L:1)

Days 8 - 10: Iguazu Falls from Brazil & Argentina
Foz do Iguazu - Curitba. Now in Brazil and Foz de Iguazu, our base for visiting the famous Iguazu Falls. Considered one of the most magnificent waterfalls in the world, Iguazu Falls has 275 cataracts in a 3km long U shape and we’ll get to see this impressive waterfall from both the Argentinian and Brazilian side for amazing perspectives. In Brazil, board a speedboat that takes you right under the falls, soaking you from head to foot, whilst on the Argentinian side you’ll find the famous ‘Devil’s Throat’ where fourteen falls drop with such force that there is always a massive cloud of spray overhead. On day 9 we take an overnight bus to the university town of Curitba, an attractive and exceptionally well-planned city with many pleasant squares and parks. Overnight - Foz do Iguazu (1), Overnight bus (1), Curitba (1) (B:2)

Days 11 - 15: Sizzling Sao Paulo
Curitba - Sao Paulo - Parati - Rio. Continuing to the sprawling metropolis of Sao Paulo we can enjoy an optional visit to a snake farm and the Latin American Exhibition Centre, designed by famous architect Oscar Niemeyer. Wind up the day with some sushi in the Japanese quarter. Surprisingly, São Paulo has the largest population of Japanese outside of Japan.

After two nights in Sao Paulo we follow the stunning coastline north to colonial Parati. This old pirate town has streets made of stone slabs designed to let the tide wash over and clean them. Explore the nearby beaches and local hippy markets or opt for a full day boat cruise around the bay where you can spend time swimming or simply relaxing on the deck whilst enjoying a fresh seafood lunch.

We spend two nights in Parati before heading to the fantastic Rio de Janeiro. Explore this colourful Brazilian city by taking a cable car up Sugar Loaf Mountain and Corcovado, the famous statue of Christ, for great city views or head to the legendary beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. Overnight - Sao Paulo (2), Parati (2), Rio de Janeiro (1) (B:5)

Day 16: Rio de Janeiro
Today our exciting adventure comes to an end or you can opt to extend your stay.

If you are planning to be in Rio de Janeiro around February/March you'll need to get ready for the world's biggest party, the Rio Carnival. See our Rio Carnival Bolt-on for more info. (B)
