Teach English in beautiful rural Thailand. Spend time on your gap year immersing yourself in Thai culture and get to know a local Thai community.
Summary

Teach in Tropical Thailand

This volunteer placement will allow you to become fully immersed in the local community and Thai culture. You will live in a beautiful rural resort, set amongst mountains and nest to a lovely lake and have the opportunity to get to know local teachers and families.

By volunteering to teach English in this beautiful rural area of Thailand, you are helping communities that don't usually get exposure to native English speakers. There is particular need in this area as a vast proportion of children are from low income farming families. Throughout Thailand English is the main language in tourism and in this area tourism is a major source of jobs and income so it's especially valued.

The students are taught English by Thai teachers in a traditional style, with more emphasis on reading and writing than on using the language to speak. Speaking and listening skills tend to be weak. The lessons you will teach are additional lessons scheduled into the timetable, so you are not replacing the Thai teacher, and it compliments their teaching nicely. You will help the children to develop their listening and speaking skills and building their confidence to use English.

During your first few days the local team will give you an introduction to Thai language and culture. On the first Monday after your arrival the teachers will take you into your school and give you an introduction and briefing. This will include:

• A tour of the school and its facilities
• Meeting the Thai teachers
• Observing a lesson being taught by the Thai teachers
• Providing you with a timetable for your teaching

Lessons may vary depending on age and ability but may include:

  Interactive learning games
  Arts and crafts
  Listening or conversation practice
Games - the children love karaoke!

You will start teaching the day after your introduction and will then teach Monday-Thursday each week You will teach from Monday-Thursday leaving you long weekends free to explore the local area including the amazing islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Donsak is by the coast and houses the ferry port for the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, so you are ideally positioned to jump on one of the frequent boat services and head off to the beach!

Feedback

“My time volunteering was truly one of the best experiences of my life. Even in just 6 weeks teaching it is easy to recognise the difference you have made in the children’s confidence to engage in conversation and their ability to understand the English language. The teachers at all the schools are incredibly welcoming and kind, going out of their way to help the volunteers settle into the schools and have the most fantastic time possible whilst teaching. The accommodation is a wonderful home base, with a wonderful team of staff who became a kind of extended family during our stay there. Pod were also a great company to volunteer with, due to their efficiency with answering emails or queries genuine desire to help and care for local communities and their volunteers.”
