Hospital Work Experience in Africa
Put your school holidays or gap year to good use - get medical work experience whilst exploring Africa. You can join us for between one and eight weeks. We provide placements in the following areas: medicine, midwifery, dentistry or nursing. Join healthcare staff on the wards and in the operating theatre – you'll be mentored by an experienced healthcare professional, who will guide you every step of the way, explaining cases and answering any questions that you have. We guarantee every student at least 23 hours of clinical shadowing time each week, so you'll have plenty of opportunity to get a real insight into medicine in the developing world.
The following departments are on offer at all of our partner hospitals: surgery, obstetrics, internal medicine and paediatrics. On top of your shadowing experience, you'll also receive three Global Health Tutorials per week. Led by health promotion experts, these sessions give you a deeper insight into the social, economic and environmental factors which contribute to what you see at the hospital. Here are some examples of the type of topics that may be covered: the treatment of dengue fever in Africa, or hypertension in Thailand.
If you want to gain some experience on the front-line of clinical care before heading off to university, or would like some healthcare experience that will really help your UCAS application to shine, Gap Medics can provide you with the perfect solution. Getting relevant work experience is crutial to the admissions process – good grades aren't enough on their own! Not only will work experience in a hospital in Africa help to show universities just how serious you are about your future career, but it will also highlight your awareness of the global issues affecting healthcare.
We want our students to feel safe, secure and relaxed during their stay with us, so we provide accommodation in our very own Gap Medics houses.
