Summary

Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica

Turtle Conservation volunteers can not only support the local community, protect the sea turtles and help with cleanup and conservation efforts of the beaches but also gain education or further develop there studies in this area. Working alongside a Costa Rican biologist to assist with sea turtle studies, conservation, protection work and help with sustainable egg protection programs. Volunteers  work day and night shifts with varied roles depending on the time of year, but general work includes beach patrols, building hatcheries to protect eggs from predators, beach cleaning, planting mangroves, education in the community, counting and tagging sea turtles, locating nesting females, and collecting eggs.

Volunteers who are helping on the Turtle Conservation project are placed in one of four locations on either the Pacific or Caribbean coast, part of the Nicoya Peninsula. Accommodation on the Turtle Conservation project is typically in dormitory-style lodging with basic amenities and 3 meals per day provided. Orientation is taken by our Costa Rica team at their offices in San Jose,  begining on Monday morning and covering everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Costa Rica (Introduction to Costa Rica, Costa Rican Customs, Language Training Details, Rules and Expectations, Safety, Travel Opportunities in Costa Rica, Introduction to your Project and Placement). The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing. Once your orientation is complete, you will be transported to your home-stay for the first night before departing the following morning to your turtle conservation site.
