Live, Work & Play Sports in Uganda
Uganda Gap Year Project
Our gap year projects and volunteering opportunities give you the chance to help a rural community through teaching for one term in carefully selected schools.
The programs take place in rural communities around the area of Jinja, on the shores of Africa’s largest lake – Lake Victoria, and close to the source of the mighty River Nile. As an AV volunteer you will have the chance to help children with writing, reading and speaking English; coach sports; get involved in extra curricular clubs; and work in the wider community. Tell us what you want to do and we will make it happen!
Whether it’s teaching academic subjects, music, drama, arts and crafts, or coaching sports, your contribution will be met with enormous gratitude.
Together with fellow AVs you will live in local houses, with a high level of independence. Spending significant time in one place lets you become fully involved and gain a sense of achievement.
Become part of the community As part of a group you will live in the middle of a community, learning about the local culture, engaging and connecting with people with lives vastly different to your own. It’s about sharing your skills and knowledge in a way that is useful to them.
Make an Impact We are passionate about the difference you can make and we work with each participant individually to ensure you can use your skills to make a meaningful contribution.
Independent, supported travel On the longer, 12-week projects, you can choose to include four weeks of independent travel, whilst still making use of our 24/7 in-country support.
Gap Year 100 We are committed to taking a maximum of 100 per year on our gap year programs. As a non-profit, AV’s focus is on providing both volunteers and our partner communities with the best experience possible and by limiting our numbers we ensure we can treat every applicant individually and place them where they can have the most impact.
AV programs are no ordinary gap year experiences, it’s a community of individuals with shared experiences and we are with you long after you get back from the project. “Once an AV, always an AV.”
Winston Churchill deservedly called Uganda “The Pearl of Africa”! It is one of the most beautiful countries on the continent, with fantastic natural scenery – the highest mountain range in Africa (The Rwenzoris), dense tropical forests, deep river valleys and lakes, tea and banana plantations, national wildlife reserves and magnificent Lake Victoria.
Despite being home to half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas in the forests along the south-western border, most tourists have not yet discovered what Uganda has to offer. Volunteering in Uganda with AV will give you an amazing insight into rural life!
Jinja is at the source of the mightiest river in the world – the Nile – with world-class white water rafting on its doorstep.
