China Gap Year Program
Our gap year projects and volunteer work opportunities in China begin in Hangzhou, regarded as China’s most beautiful city and located just 40 minutes from Shanghai by bullet train.
After learning Mandarin intensively for a month, you will be able to volunteer by teaching English at a rural school for underprivileged primary school children. You can also get involved with teaching other extracurricular activities like music and sports. You’ll be based in the stunning Thousand Island Lake District, three hours from Hangzhou.
The people are friendly and they will welcome you with beaming smiles!
Become part of the community As part of a group you will live in the middle of a community, learning about the local culture, engaging and connecting with people with lives vastly different to your own. It’s about sharing your skills and knowledge in a way that is useful to them.
Make an Impact We are passionate about the difference you can make and we work with each participant individually to ensure you can use your skills to make a meaningful contribution.
Gap Year 100 We are committed to taking a maximum of 100 per year on our gap year programs. As a non-profit, AV’s focus is on providing both volunteers and our partner communities with the best experience possible and by limiting our numbers we ensure we can treat every applicant individually and place them where they can have the most impact.
AV programs are no ordinary gap year experiences, it’s a community of individuals with shared experiences and we are with you long after you get back from the project. “Once an AV, always an AV.”

The world has now woken up to the fact that China will be the next superpower and its global influence, fueled by its size and unrivalled development, means that China can’t be ignored by any young person in the West.
Its economic power and huge population are well known, but there is a hidden side of China few outsiders see, a rural side, nestled in stunning countryside which rarely gets the coverage of the larger cities.
The AV volunteer program provides a glimpse of life on both sides of the economic and urban-rural divide, with the Mandarin course taking place in cosmopolitan Hangzhou, a playground for China’s rich and famous, and the volunteering being based in a countryside village which has almost been left behind in China’s wave of development.
