Think Maldives and what comes to mind? A sun-kissed white beach framed by turquoise water. A tropical paradise that’s not your typical backpacker destination. Now it’s time to think again!

Island Hopping in Paradise

Until recently the Maldives experience has been restricted to an exclusive – in more ways than one – resort lifestyle.  However, following changes in local laws, tourists are now permitted to stay on all islands and so, for the first time experience the real Maldives.  With the introduction of local island guesthouses together with budget airlines flying from Sri Lanka and India the Maldives is beginning to find itself on the backpacker map.

Secret Paradise offers a great way to experience the natural beauty of the Maldives and gain an insight into the culture and tradition of Maldivian life.

Secret Paradise arranges accommodation in local island guesthouses, run by and for local people; organises meals with island families in their homes and introduces you to local crafts, Maldivian style fishing and the art of the cultural Bodu Beru music and dance. You can of course experience all those other things for which the Maldives is renowned: diving and snorkeling, sunset safaris and relaxation.

So, if you have the desire to learn to SCUBA dive or surf, are in need of relaxation away from your hectic schedule or maybe you just want to make your friends envious of your time spent in this island paradise then contact Secret Paradise. We guarantee a Maldives experience that is affordable and fun!

Our backpacker breaks are designed to either work as a self-contained budget Maldives experience or as a start to an independent stay in the archipelago.

Our short stay packages are ideal for those looking to experience the Maldives on a budget or for travelers who also wish to experience resort life in the Maldives or are planning a vacation in Sri Lanka or India. They offer an excellent way to combine both styles of vacation, particularly as all packages start and finish at Male International Airport and should a package not entirely suit we are able to customize.

With our longer stay experience discover the natural beauty of the Maldives. Gain an insight into the culture and tradition of Maldivian life and travel to different locally inhabited islands accompanied by a local guide.

Day One:
Arrive Male International Airport where you will be greeted by our representative who will assist you with your public ferry transfer to your local island in South Male Atoll. The ferry operates every day excluding FRIDAY and leaves Male at 14:30 taking 120 minutes to journey across the Indian Ocean to Guraidhoo. You can choose to sit up top and view the beauty of the many Maldives islands that pass you by, keeping your eyes open for dolphins or sit inside, amongst the fruit and vegetables, mattresses and electrical items that have been purchased that day  and chat with the locals.
Upon arrival at your guesthouse you will have time to settle in before experiencing traditional ‘hedika’ - Maldivian savoury and sweet short eats served with black tea at a local cafe.

Day Two:
Breakfast this morning is served at your guesthouse before being taken out by boat to enjoy a 90 minute guided snorkeling trip to nearby reefs to discover the underwater world of the Maldives.  The afternoon is yours to relax or for those feeling a little more energetic take advantage of the many water sport options available including snorkeling, surfing in season and diving.
This evening enjoy dinner with a local family allowing you to true access to Maldives local life.

Day Three:
Following breakfast you will be taken by speedboat to an uninhabited picnic island, approximately 1km long. Here you have the opportunity to swim, snorkel or just lie back and relax before eating a BBQ lunch and then enjoying more of the same!  Timing approx. 10.00-16.00 – shade available from vegetation.

Day Four:
Following an early breakfast you will transfer by 7:00 early morning public ferry to Male and on to Male International Airport or your onward destination.

We hope you think it is time to adventure Maldivian style!
