Explore China - Teach English
Here at Teach English in China, we have been organising placements for over 10 years, building strong relationships with well-established schools in cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Wuhan. We have two types of teaching placement available: a whole academic year, starting in September, or 4/5 month jobs, starting in February.
Our programme is just £549, which includes a TEFL, a teacher training day in London, a former teacher ‘buddy’ to turn to for help and advice, a two week training period in Beijing and access to our exclusive lesson plan library. All this is designed to ensure you walk into the classroom with confidence.
Why work in China?
Living like a local gives you the chance to really see the country and make a home on the other side of the world. It opens you up to a new culture like no other.
What are the application requirements?
You must be a graduate in any discipline, or be planning to graduate in July 2016. You can apply for this programme by yourself or with a friend, and we will endeavour to place you in the same city. Previous teaching experience is not a requirement for any of our placements, although public speaking or volunteering work in the past certainly puts you at an advantage. We are looking for positive, organised and committed individuals who will take living and working abroad in their stride.
What kind of teaching support is available?
We have a vast library of resources online tailored to each age group. Over the years our teachers have contributed to this ever growing site, making it as varied and as inclusive as possible. It’s the ethos of Teach English in China to involve our former teachers in helping you wherever possible, after all, they have experienced it for themselves, and so are best suited to advising and training future teachers. Your school will provide a curriculum, however, there’s also scope to use your own creativity and imagination. Teachers are actively encouraged to use games, songs, dances or any other method to get Chinese students using oral English with confidence.
What about salaries, accommodation and hours?
You will work between 16-20 hours Mon-Fri, leaving weekends free. The salary is anywhere between £500-£1100 per month, depending on location, and accommodation is provided in most cases. In China this is a comfortable salary bracket, and our teachers tend to spend half and save half, be it to take home or to travel with.
Will there be opportunities to travel?
The teaching schedule leaves plenty of time to explore. You will have weekends off, and there’s a winter break for Chinese New Year, which is between 4-6 weeks, as well as a week off in October, various days off for National Holidays and 8 weeks during the summer when the term ends. Most of our teachers travel around China as well as other neighbouring countries such as Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia. Some branch out further afield, most recently including Japan, Australia and Bali.
