Community & Gorilla Conservation
Immerse yourself in a welcoming rural community in the green mountains of south west Uganda, right next the mountain gorillas. Whatever your experience and whatever skills, ideas and knowledge you can bring, you’ll be able to share them through a bespoke volunteer programme with our sister organisation, Big Beyond. You will be part of a small motivated team helping to create sustainable change for conservation and development in Africa. You will be supporting a range of projects including teaching, conservation, business and finance, community tourism, health, events, marketing and farming.
This volunteer opportunity is truly unique. From the amazing location and initiatives to the friendly local people and the genuine connections you will make with them. Our Big Beyond project is for volunteers looking for something a little different - an authentic travel adventure and the chance to apply your individual experience to make a sustainable impact in rural Africa.
Through this project you get the chance to live in ‘the pearl of Africa’ and experience one of East Africa’s highlights, Uganda. It’s an absolutely stunning country to discover and its people are utterly charming. Up in the mountains you’ll be living right on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – a lush rainforest home to half the world’s population of rare mountain gorillas.
Each volunteer program is carefully crafted to make full use of your individual abilities and interests, ensuring that you’ll make a valuable contribution where most needed. Some projects are skills-based, others are more practical.
Big Beyond works in Uganda to help this important national park and its gorillas have a future and to support the communities living on the forest’s borders to develop happier and more sustainable lives.
Our volunteers are supported day-to-day by a dedicated local and international team. Whilst being closely guided towards well researched objectives, you’ll be offered a great level of freedom leading your project role – in return, we ask for self-motivation, initiative, enthusiasm and support for our capacity-building approach. You’ll gain a genuine insight into the challenges faced locally, both in conservation and community development, as will be inspired by the opportunities this amazing continent holds.
We invite you to be on our Ugandan team and make a positive impact for this often forgotten corner of Africa.
