Volunteer Activity Instructor UK
The Volunteer Activity Instructor role is active and varied. Based at Fairthorne Manor, you will be part of the Outdoor Learning Team and provide a range of activities and services to our community, including members, schools, families, Daycamps, nurseries and local groups. You will be trained to lead a wide range of outdoor activities including High ropes, Water activities, Bushcraft and Team Building activities to children and adults of all ages and abilities.
You will host and support the various groups that use us, preparing accommodation, providing evening entertainment, serving meals, marshalling events and maintaining the activities and Centre as a whole.
Your work here will be varied, but generally you will be leading activity sessions for children and young people, helping them achieve new challenges and have fun! This is a physically demanding job and you will be working hard whilst you are here, it’s a very busy place. The Centre operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so come prepared for a busy but enjoyable time.
In addition to running the activities you will also contribute to the running of the Centre in other ways. This will include working as part of the Estates team, Housekeeping team, Kitchen and Nursery.
You will join a large and diverse team of between 40-50 people from all over the world. You will share your experience and make lifelong friends with people from different cultures, languages, abilities and talents.
This opportunity is as much an adventure for you as it it the children and families you will work with, so having fun wont be a problem.
We host a variety of community events including Family Camping Festivals, Survival Challenges, Seasonal Activities (spooky campfire) and an amazing Young Carers Festival with 1400 young people attending.
During the first few weeks of your stay at Fairthorne you will be given an induction to the Centre. Topics covered during this period include; Health and Safety, Child Protection, First Aid, and the YMCA Way.
Activity training will include High Ropes, Kayaking, Fire Lighting, Den Building, Raft Building, Team Building & Initiative Tests, Archery, Assault Courses and much more. Having completed this induction you will then have the opportunity to observe some of the activities taking place before actually assisting with the instruction.
It will not be long though before you are assisting with you first group, but the training does not stop there. After this initial period we will both have a better understanding of the activities you are most comfortable with and further training and an assessment will be given to enable you to take the lead and run the activity yourself. In fact this training is on going throughout your stay and you will be able to take advantage of this to gain experience in a wide range of activities.
