Shark Conservation in Indonesia
Gili Shark Conservation project is a small conservation and data collection program seeking hardworking and enthusiastic participants who want to learn and stay in paradise while making a difference on their holiday. It is the first of it's kind in the Gili Islands, and takes an active role in conservation issues in Indonesia's three Gili Islands; Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air.
This dive intensive program is located on the quiet and relaxed island of Gili Air. As a member of the Gili Shark Warriors, you will be working alongside a team of international underwater researchers and learning about the fragile ecosystem and its many living organisms. It combines a nice balance between work and play while you enjoy the beautiful surroundings of this jewel in the Gillis.
During your first 2 weeks at the project you will receive a comprehensive dive and methodology training with PADI dive and Project AWARE specialty courses. You will work with experienced dive instructors and field scientists from around the world to further your diving and marine biology knowledge. All diving activities take place at our affiliated dive centre, Oceans5 Dive Resort. Only minutes from the project headquarters.
You will learn how to conduct survey dives and BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video) data collection. We also conduct island wide shark and ray abundance surveys, shark and turtle photo identification, beach and underwater clean ups, community work with the local schools, and community events to help the Gili Matra Marine Reserve and the environment of Gili Air.
The program fee includes accommodation, food, all diving and course related costs with the project, and transportation from Bali or Lombok to Gili Air. Our research assistants accommodation is shared living in a large luxurious villa with kitchen, pool, air conditioning, and hot water. Located in the heart of Gili Air you are only a few minutes bike ride to the main beach in the south and the dive shop in the northern side of the island. This little slice of paradise has been turned into a fully function research facility equipped with a computer lap and fast wifi connection.
For decades, Indonesia has been ranked as the number one shark fishing nation in the world. This overfishing has resulted in a greatly reduced number of sharks in the local waters.Make a real difference in conservation through research and data collection and through local awareness events to help save the sharks of Indonesia! You will be entering the project as one of the team members and your ideas and hard work are valued in its growth and success.

Villa Nangka - Accomodation
Villa Nangka is a unique boutique hotel located at the heart of Gili Air. This hidden getaway is named after the big beautiful Nangka tree (Jackfruit) in the center of the garden. As soon as you walk through the gate, you notice the spacious set up (2000 m2) and you will feel the tranquility. Villa Nangka has a fully equipped open kitchen that looks out to the 11-meter long swimming pool.
This is the project headquarters and research team’s accommodation. It’s your home away from home!! The Gili Shark Conservation project has transformed the largest 2-bedroom villa into a conservation office and project headquarters. Data entry or studying for your dive courses while sitting by the pool is not a bad way to spend your afternoons.
The property is shared amongst the Gili Shark research team and tourists staying in the hotel so noise is kept to a minimum after 10pm. It comes with a staff of 3 local boys (The Nangka Boys) who play music and hang out at the project and are there to help with everything around the villa and provide 24-hour security. If you’re lucky they will make you some of their famous banana pancakes with local honey!
For more information about the accommodation check out their website at http://villanangkagiliair.com/
