Summary

Outdoor Leader Semester

The Outdoor Leader Semester will teach you all the leadership and technical skills you need to work in the outdoor industry through Outward Bound holistic approach to experiential learning. You will earn 7 internationally-recognized certifications, making you a desired instructor or guide around the world and pushing you to get out of your comfort zone.

You will learn to set up camp in the dense cloud rainforest, scuba dive in the crystal-clear water of the 68-island Archipelago of Bocas del Toro in Panama and surf the warm-water breaks of some of the most renowned beaches of Costa Rica. 

Outdoor Leader Semester top alumni also get the chance to come the following summer for a paid instructor internship with Outward Bound Costa Rica, where they will work side by side with experiencied Costa Rican and international instructors - and there is the possibility of  staying as a year-round instructor. 

You can earn up to 10 academic credits by completing this course.

Here are the different certifications you will earn:

 

- Wilderness First Responder (Outward Bound Costa Rica): teaches individuals how to react in emergency situations in an expeditionary or backcountry setting.

- CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (American Red Cross): covers how to assess and respond to first aid, cardiac and breathing emergencies.

- Whitewater Rescue Technician (Rescue 3 International): addresses all major aspects of water rescue, including safety guidelines, professional rescue qualifications and more.

- Technical Rope Rescue: Operations Level (Rescue 3 International): provides training to perform rescues in settings such as mountain wilderness terrain, snow fields and caves.

- Whitewater Raft Guide License (International Rafting Federation): covers how to read and respond to different river conditions and circumstances as a group guide.

- Scuba Diver or Advanced Scuba Diver Certification (National Association of Underwater Instructors): provides knowledge of dive equipment, dive science, dive safety, responsible diving practices, and the aquatic environment.

- Waterfront Lifeguarding (American Red Cross): teaches the skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies in both pools and waterfront settings.
