Volunteer Opportunities in Slums
WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
You will live with and work with our partner NGOs Lok Seva Sangam (Mumbai) Parva (Jaipur) or Mukuru Promotion Centre (Nairobi). You will work either teaching conversational English to pre primary school children, helping them with their education or assisting with the health clinics. You may also be involved in community development projects.
You will live in hostels or flats rented for volunteers or as a paying guest with local families. Accommodation charges are very reasonable.
SLUMS IN INDIA AND AFRICA
Housing is simply unaffordable and out of reach of slum dwellers in the major cities where we work. Slums attract migrant workers who come to the cities from impoverished villages in search of work. Those that do not find work live by recycling from the rubbish dumps that surround the slums.
It is not uncommon for slum dwellers to sleep 12-20 to a room. Electrical connections are erratic as the electricity is usually illegally connected.
The slums do not have running water or sanitation; water has to be bought and bathing and washing is often in the open air at communal taps. There is little money for food, medicine and other necessities. Nonetheless the inhabitants are keen for their children to obtain an education and generally make sure their children turn up to school clean and neatly dressed.
Young children in the slums have a great hunger for learning. We believe education will help them get a job or further education. It may enable them to move out of the cycle of deprivation which they suffer having to live in very impoverished conditions.
SlumAid contributes towards the salaries of local teachers who are there all the year round and our volunteers assist in their work. We do not claim to solve all the slum dwellers’ problems - we simply want some to get a good education so they can obtain a better standard of living.
You will find the volunteering experience very rewarding and fulfilling. You will learn a great deal about poverty in the developing world where rapid development and urbanisation has left an estimated 42% of the population in abject poverty and living in slums which, despite its lack of any amenities, have developed as thriving communities with their own sub culture and way of life. It will broaden your vision and approach to life. The experience will help you with your own personal development.
