Help out at a primate rescue centre located on the edge of the Amazon rainforest
Summary

Volunteer with Monkeys in Ecuador

With over 60 monkeys and other amazing Amazonian animals to care for, you could make a real difference helping out at this incredible sanctuary which is located on the edge of a winding river in the rainforest.

There is a wide variety of monkey breeds including squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys, spider monkeys, woolly monkeys and tamarins. The sanctuary is also home to margays (a South American big cat), coatis (a member of the raccoon family) and tortoises.

The sanctuary

The sanctuary animals have been rescued from those who have held them as pets in captivity and from those who have attempted to sell them as part of the illegal pet trade. As a result, these creatures are unable to be rehabilitated into their natural environment due to their familiarity with humans. Deforestation is another factor which has encouraged the centre to create an expansive ‘jungle paradise’ for these animals to roam freely and as naturally as possible within an enclosure.

Your role

This wonderful conservation project needs volunteers to keep it going. Prepare to work hard, get mucky and interact with a variety of primates and other natural species. Typical jobs that you may do include food preparation and feeding, checking waters, cleaning out enclosures, creating enrichments, raising orphan babies, basic maintenance, building structures for enclosures, painting, gardening and clearing paths. There are many more!

Speaking a bit of Spanish will certainly benefit you. Please be prepared to contribute to your own volunteer community by preparing meals, cleaning communal areas in your accommodation and looking after sanctuary pets. You’ll need to get used to the monkeys making strange noises on your bedroom rooftop!

Accommodation

Dorms rooms sleep up to 6 people. There are two comfortable sized bathrooms with hot and cold water. Food is provided but cooking is your responsibility. Communal areas include a kitchen, living room, dining area and lovely small terrace which you’ll often be sharing with primate friends!
