Wildlife Volunteering in Ecuador

This sanctuary is home to a variety of animals that have been mistreated in the past and now have the opportunity to live out the rest of their lives in comfort and safety. These animals come for a variety of backgrounds. Some have been kept in small cages in poorly run zoos, others have been kept illegally as pets or used as part of the illegal pet trade, and some have been injured on roads or by people. The sanctuary endeavours to rehabilitate all animals where possible.

The Sanctuary

You will be living in the heart of the sanctuary that spreads through roughly 8 hectares of beautiful Ecuadorian woodland. There are about 35 different species who need volunteers to help feed and provide enrichments. If you are looking to start a career in animal management and other related disciplines, then this is a great way to gain unique work experience. There are animals that live in the sanctuary who have constant interaction with staff and volunteers. There are also those that inhabit wonderful islands to enable them to not become accustomed to human interaction and live as wildly as is possible.

The programme

Volunteers help with the day to day running of the sanctuary to ensure that the animals enjoy a good quality of life. Jobs include food preparation, feeding, providing enrichments, cleaning enclosures, building structures, general maintenance and cooking and cleaning for fellow volunteers.

Volunteers are accommodated right in the centre of the sanctuary in one of three log cabins which house between 4 and 6 people in bunk beds. There are shared bathroom facilities with hot and cold showers. WiFi is available but limited and there is access to a swimming pool which is much appreciated after a long and muggy day working outside in tropical temperatures! Hammocks outside the accommodation and a lounge area inside allow for volunteers to relax during the hot midday temperatures and humid evenings.

Food is provided on weekdays and prepared between volunteers. You have access to a well-equipped kitchen.
