Volunteer with African elephants
An inspiring project
Africa’s magnificent elephants face multiple threats. The Ivory trade in Africa encourages senseless killings, while urban expansion is displacing them from their traditional territories. Some of the lucky ones have found a safe home at this well-run sanctuary in a beautiful part of South Africa. The aim is to rehabilitate them (especially those who have experienced trauma) so that they can live as a herd and roam freely in the 110 hectare site. As well as helping these elephants, the sanctuary is carrying out vital conservation research so that living conditions for elephants can be improved across the continent.
As a volunteer you will help with feeding and caring for the elephants, as well as getting involved with educational and research work. On a typical day you might find yourself chopping food, feeding a baby elephant, observing the elephants and recording their behaviour or helping with educational tours. You will get to know the elephants individually and share their daily routines. It’s a very special opportunity for anyone who wants to work closely with these magnificent creatures and learn more about their way of life.
You will live in comfortable self-catering accommodation at the sanctuary. There are regular trips into town to stock up on food and have a look around. The sanctuary is located on South Africa’s stunning Garden Route – a popular area for tourists.
Our UK staff will get you fully prepared beforehand and will be able to advise and help throughout. Once in South Africa, you’ll be met at the airport and well looked after by the project staff.
