Who does this suit?

If you are looking to gain veterinary experience or put your skills into practice, this programme is a great way to gain a practical knowledge base. The programme has been designed to give participants plenty of practical experience, backed up with theoretical understanding.

Your role

Each day you will help to complete daily checks on all animals requiring special attention. This often includes domestic and wild animals which are part of a rescue and rehabilitation programme, wild animals from the reserve which have sustained injury or become unwell or cubs that are being hand reared for rehabilitation. The tasks at hand all depend on the specific cases at the time, however you can expect to work on a diverse variety of cases. You will learn how to check the animals for any signs of discomfort, how to identify when an animal is sick and how to work with an unwell animal without causing distress.

In addition to the veterinary tasks, participants work throughout the reserve on a variety of animal management and conservation tasks. These can include lion tracking and monitoring, game counts and captures, planting and building and helping out at the elephant sanctuary. Greater veterinary internship tasks can include treatment of infection, checking for illness, application of vitamins, minor operations, use of a dart gun and other such tasks.

Wake up to stunning views over the prairie in beautiful accommodation situated in the heart of the reserve. Spacious dormitory style rooms, large lounges and outdoor areas are here for you to enjoy. There are swimming pools, tennis courts, internet access and other facilities at the main lodge for your use. Three meals are provided each day and the food boosts a great mix of traditional and western style foods.
