Sports coaching in South Africa

An inspiring project
If you are passionate about sport and would like to pass your skills on, then our sport and childcare project in South Africa is perfect for you!  Nelson Mandela once said that “Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way little else can”.  He was right – and you can be part of this.

This brilliant project gets sports enthusiasts out into the poorest local schools so that they can share their skills with the children.  This is a big deal for the kids, who aren’t used to the luxury of sports clubs and special coaching. You’ll be helping them develop their skills, self-discipline and maybe bringing on some exciting talent.  Whatever your favourite sport we can use you, whether it’s football, netball, hockey, swimming, cricket, rugby, tennis or basketball.

Your role
You will join staff and a group of like-minded volunteers at the project, based near Port Elizabeth.  Each weekday you will pile into minibuses and head off to the poorest schools in the area, where excited kids will be waiting for you. You won’t find amazing facilities, but it really doesn’t matter.  The enthusiasm and energy of the children more than make up for it.

You can either choose to specialise in one particular sport, or take part in several. If you’ve never coached sport before, don’t worry.  The project staff will give you plenty of guidance and ideas.  What matters most is your attitude and your ability to inspire the kids.

Accommodation
You will live in comfortable accommodation in an attractive area of Port Elizabeth.  It’s a relaxing place to hang out, with a gym, a games room, swimming pool and TV lounge.  All your meals are provided by a friendly cook, who will give you a buffet breakfast, a packed lunch to take out to the schools and a large dinner each evening.  Some of the staff live on site, so you’ll get to know them well too.

If you can drag yourself away from the comforts of the house, you’ll find plenty to do in Port Elizabeth with its white sand beaches, incredible surfing and night life.  There are various excursions included during your stay and the beach is a mere 10 minutes drive away.

Support
Our UK staff will get you fully prepared beforehand and will be able to advise and help throughout.  Once in South Africa, you’ll be met at the airport and well looked after by the project staff.
