Summary

Costa Rica Performing Arts Programs

From volunteer programs working with local youth to our specialised High School Summer Experience program, Performing Arts Abroad has many opportunities to get involved with the arts in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica’s arts scene infuses every aspect of the country, from the influence of Afro-Caribbean rhythms to pre-Columbian dances to traditionally Spanish music. Theatre, opera, ballet, and classical music are flourishing in the cultural centre of San José, home to the National Theatre, National Dance Workshop, and National Symphony Orchestra. On the country’s Caribbean coast, music and dance are an integral part of everyday life, with calypso and reggae, a maypole dance called the cuadrille, and an annual music festival. Best of all, the small size means travelers are only hours away from cloud forests, beaches, and rainforests.

High School Summer Experience

This summer group program—designed and delivered in partnership with the renowned Costa Rican Language Academy (CRLA)—brings high school students together to explore the beauty and culture of Costa Rica through the performing arts. Throughout the trip participants will reflect on their experiences, and the trip culminates with a final devised collaborative performance with youth from an arts volunteer project in San Jose.

Dance Volunteering

Share your passion for dance by volunteering with young people in Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose. We work with a variety of volunteer placements, including orphanages, day care centres, public schools, and after school programs. We also have relationships with several dance studios throughout the city for those volunteers interested in working with higher-level dancers. The folk dance Punto Guanacaste is the official national dance of Costa Rica and uses heel-and-toe stomping to tell the tale of enchanted lovers. Guanacaste dances are based on the Spanish paseo, with maidens wearing dazzlingly bright skirts circled by men in white suits and cowboy hats.

Music Volunteering

Enrich your appreciation of the power of music and impact local children by volunteering abroad in one of our music projects in San Jose, Costa Rica. We have connections with several music organisations in Costa Rica's capital, San Jose, where volunteers are able to co-teach an orchestra, give lessons, and work with young people to develop their musical talents.
