Volunteers assist and learn from the vets as they provide totally free and vital medical care, rescue abandoned and injured animals, operate, treat and nurture their patients back to health. The animals are a mixture of stray dogs and cats, working horses, donkeys and camels, monkeys rescued from the pet trade industry, cows that wander the streets of the city, pets of families living in poverty and wildlife such as parrots, raptors and squirrels.

Animals come in for a variety of reasons, including fight wounds, car accidents, infectious diseases, skin disorders, parasites, broken horns, problems giving birth and having eaten plastic items in the rubbish dumps where they are forced to scavenge.  The team at the clinic are friendly and welcoming and keen to teach and develop the skills of their volunteers.

LOCATION

Ahmedabad India, the largest city and former capital of Gujarat, which is a state in India. With a population of more than 6.3 million and an extended population of 7.8 million, it is the sixth largest city and seventh largest metropolitan area of India. Ahmedabad is located on the banks of the Sabarmati River.
Once you head out of the city you come to quiet lanes flanked by temples, kids playing on the road side and women selling fresh fruits. About 40 minutes from the city you find the Indian Vet Clinic, at the end of a quiet lane in the countryside. A breath of fresh air from the buyzzing city life

WHERE YOU STAY

You are accommodated in a modern flat in the cultural city center of Ahmedabad. This area of the city buzzes 24 hours a day and the shops stay open until 8pm. It is safe to walk around this area in day and night time, so volunteers can explore after work and on days off. Volunteers will often share a room between 2 and have a communal bathroom, kitchen and living room. Volunteers regularly enjoy dinner out with the project co-ordinator, Lalu, and the whole team. This is a great way to see India from the ‘inside’ and find out the best local places to enjoy Indian food and culture.
