Backpacking in Iceland on a Gap Year,
ICYE UK’s ethical volunteering programme provides a true cultural immersion for volunteers who support local development NGOs in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
Are you interested in taking a gap year before starting University. Would you like to experience a real cultural immersion while supporting some of the world’s most exciting community development groups? Perhaps you are searching for a fantastic way to build new skills as part of a career break?
ICYE UK has over 20 years of experience of providing supported international volunteering opportunities and we pride ourself on delivering extensive training, individual support and promoting cross-cultural understanding.
Established in 1993, ICYE UK is the only UK Charity which is a member of the ICYE Federation. Formed of over 30 partner countries, each ICYE office provides ethical, volunteer placements for some of the world’s most inspiring community development organisations. We believe in a world where the sharing of cultures and ideas is embraced, celebrated and lived and achieve this through providing supported international volunteer opportunities that directly benefit local communities while encouraging young people from around the world to live, learn and work together.
ICYE UK works with people who see volunteering abroad as a chance to broaden their horizons and to develop themselves as individuals through youth mobility and intercultural learning. Our placements enable individuals to live and volunteer in another country to gain experience and a better understanding of their own and other people’s lives.

More information about this gap year opportunity...
Immediate opportunities available to support local NGOs throughout Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe!
All community development projects overseas are run by local people who truly understand the challenges and reality of development projects in their country, giving volunteers a real insight into ‘development-in-action’.
Projects are hugely varied and include the following;
Formal and non-formal education - Working alongside street educators and local volunteers in providing shelter and food, and running literacy classes, vocational training with street children in Colombia, Ghana and India
Working with Minority groups like Roma communities in Finland, LGBT in Bolivia, and with people living with HIV/AIDS in Mozambique.
Social Inclusion and Human Rights, such as working with human rights organisations in Costa Rica, refugees in Italy, and women’s rights organisations in Honduras.
Art & Culture, such a promoting artistic and animation activities with rural children in Honduras and Mozambique, Nepal, and Uganda
Environmental conservation roles, including working in ecological projects in Costa Rica and Mexico.
Supporting those with special needs- such as organising activities and providing assistance to persons with disabilities in Ecuador and South Korea.
Interested individuals have the opportunity to visit our project database and ICYE UK works with each volunteer to point them in the direction of suitable projects for them. Our aim is to provide placements that allow volunteers to make a positive contribution to the community in which they will live and work, so supporting volunteers to find the right project is essential!
As well as supporting a local project with their time and skills, ICYE UK volunteers also largely live with host families, offering them a true integration into the local community. This is a great way for volunteers to develop language skills, get to know the surrounding community a little better and so gain a better understanding of their own and other people’s lives.
Host families are well versed in receiving volunteers and often have a son or a daughter who is taking part in the ICYE programme in another partner country! This means volunteers often have the opportunity to meet their host siblings during training courses in their home countries, before departure for their own placement!
A small number of projects are also able to offer on-site project accommodation for volunteers who would prefer to live at the project itself.
What else does ICYE UK provide?

ICYE UK volunteers receive extensive pre- departure training where the focus is on inter-cultural awareness, the practicalities of the placement, conflict resolution strategies and making new friends! Our pre-departure training coincides with training for International volunteers based in the UK ... so training camps are always sure to be exciting and interesting cultural experiences!
On arrival in the host country, volunteers receive extensive training to help them settle into their new surroundings… and make new friends along the way!
