Summary

Giant Panda Volunteer Experience

Located in the mountainous Bifengxia range, this project offers volunteers an exclusive insight into the care of the giant panda species, and aims to educate people on why these incredible animals need our help.

Itinerary (may be subject to change - what follows is a rough guideline.)

Day 1
Transfer from Chengdu International Airport to the Mrs Panda Hostel in Chengdu. Feel free to explore the area, and get your first taste of Chinese culture! Try delicious market food, visit craft stalls and settle into your new surrounds.

Day 2
Enjoy breakfast at the hostel, before heading to Chengdu’s Panda Breeding Centre. See what is being achieved at the centre, and see if you can spot any of the other residents at the facility, such as the adorable red panda! Take a walking tour of Chengdu, taking in sights such as Tianfu Square, People's Park and Kunzhai Alley. End the day with a welcoming meal at a local restaurant.

Day 3
Rise early, before transferring with your fellow volunteers to the Bifengxia Panda Reserve to truly begin your time on the project (breakfast is served upon arrival at the tourist centre.) Head to the hotel, which you will now call home for the rest of the project's duration. Unpack, enjoy lunch, and then change into your project uniform! You may opt to go on a 3-hour waterfall walk at this point; otherwise, feel free to take the rest of the day at leisure. Return for dinner and watch a movie at the panda base.

Day 4
Today is the day you'll get to meet the pandas for the first time! Head over to your assigned area in the panda centre, and begin cleaning the enclosures (both inside and out.) After this, take an hour to observe the bears up close…and look forward to feeding them, too! These hungry animals need to be fed four times a day - feel free to wonder how they manage to burn off their energy! Take a walk around the sanctuary to observe the other bears, before enjoying an evening class in dumpling making! Later, discover the ancient Chinese game of Mahjong, before tucking in to another delicious meal.

Day 5
Here begins another day of volunteering: clean your panda's enclosure, and spend time feeding the bears! If you've been lucky enough to be placed with a mother panda and her cubs, you'll love watching the keepers feed the young ones. Once your volunteering tasks for the day are complete, head back to the centre and take the chance to learn both the Chinese language, and Chinese calligraphy.

Day 6
Take part in the same activities of the previous day, finishing at 4pm. Spend some quality time with your fellow volunteers at the on-site bar, playing games such as the local Mahjong! If you wish, you're welcome to further explore the panda centre - why not take the time to learn about the good work that goes on here?

Day 7
It's sadly time to say your goodbye, as you will transfer back to Chengdu International Airport to return home, or begin your onward travel plans.
